Why was my Speechify refund request denied by Apple?

I signed up for a 3 day trial for Speechify and accidentally signed up for a subscription. I never received an alert and was signed up for $139.99 subscription! Is there any reason besides “refund request denied” as to why I can’t refund? Seems a bit disgusting and predatory considering I thought I would sign up for a month ($12ish, not $139.99). Now I’m stuck with a year long subscription for an app I’m not sold on. Any advice?

PS I reached out to Speechify and they approved my refund but hit me with the “you need to ask Apple because they manage their subscriptions” line.
