How to fix black DNG image previews from Pentax K-70 camera in Sequoia 15.4.1?

Since updating to Sequoia 15.4.1, previews for DNG image files from my Pentax K-70 camera have gone black. Is there a patch to correct this problem?

OK, so understand that you mean the Preview app rather than Quicklook or the preview mode of another app. Your signature

indicates you're using Monterey, but your text says Sequoia-- is Sequoia correct?

You don't say what sort of "fujifilm system" you're using, but I understand that raf files are RAW files. Here is a list of supported RAW formats:

Digital camera RAW formats supported by iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and visionOS 2 - Apple Support

Look at how many cameras are on this list! Every camera model and sub-model has its very own RAW format that's different from all the others. Apple doesn't seem interested in writing new code to support them all, and I find it hard to blame them for that. My own Nikon Z8's compressed NEFs are not supported, but it works fine for me, since I generate NEFs and jpgs, both.

Again, my DNG files from Adobe's Lightroom work fine in Sequoia, and I've not heard of anyone having problems with DNG files. How are your DNG files generated? You can use Adobe's free Digital Negative (DNG) converter to make a universally acceptable RAW picture file. This is the format that Lightroom uses when it creates a new (edited) RAW file, and Apple and Photos supports it. Do those DNG files work for you?

Since the problem is not inherent to Sequoia, you should try these things:

  • Restart the computer (of course)
  • Re-start in Safe Mode. This bypasses certain potentially disruptive processes, and it often helps. Safe Mode is different for different computers, so see this:

I mean precisely that DNG files do not display their preview in Finder since release of Sequoia 15.4.1. I am using Sequoia and keep the system up to date.

I am awarer of the long list of cameras supported in OS software.

I have also seen posts on various platforms documenting the same problem with raw files from a range of cameras including nikons.

I note that another Community member nzjrr has written

'After speaking to 3 Mac support people I finally learnt that Apple is aware of the problem.'

I have also sent a bug report to Apple.

On the Mac desktop finder, open a folder containing image files. Under view menu there are the options to show the sidebar (list of locations and favourite folders on the left) and preview (with large image thumbnail and file info on the right). I have used Pentax images for years on Mac and this preview is a useful option. Mac OSs previous to sequoia have shown an image preview thumbnail for .dng files. These are now blank.

.png & .jpg etc files show the preview.

I want the preview for .dng files back!

On the same topic, I also have a fujifilm system and the .raf (digital negatives) have never shown a preview. I would like that to be implemented too.

My guess is that somewhere in the code tinkering the parameters for displaying these previews has been changed in the latest OS. Equally it could be (re)changed to continue to display previews of .dng and also enable previews of .raf file types.

What to do?

Thanks for the responses. I wasn't specific enough in my original message. The problem I'm having seems to be what franzeli (a fellow Pentax user!) is describing. In Finder, the larger thumbnails for DNG files (the kind you normally get in "column" and "gallery" views) have gone blank. I can still see the tiny icon views in Finder, but the thumbnails are black. When I open the file in Preview, it is black for a second or two, then appears. It is only the large thumbnails that are a problem. I just updated this computer to Sequoia 15.4.1. Before this update, I did not have this problem. Nor do I have it Monterey, which I'm still using on another MacBook Pro. I tried restarting, but that made no difference. I know this is more of an annoyance than a real problem, but those large thumbnails are handy for determining which image files to open. So, like franzeli, I miss having them.
