Ipad Storage Full - Unable to Install Software Update 18.4.1

I've been searching for help in clearing out my iPad so that I can install the latest update and find that much of the information found is either inaccurate (I don't see an "Offload Unsued Apps" selection in my storate settings) and I havaen't found anyone to explain why I have about 9gb of off data in my Photos and Apple Music apps when I do not store any of those files on my iPad (straight to iCloud, where I have 2 TB of storage).

I have an iPad Pro with 64GB of storage. My iPadOS version is 18.3.2, so i just went through this few month ago. I do have a lot of apps and starting to delete them, but most are under 5MB in size. My top 7 apps in size are between 5.2 and 1.2 GB with Photos and music being the top.

Would by best course of action be to reset my iPad and start with a clean slate ad reinstall apps as needed?

If I delete for instance, YouTube, OneDrive or OneNote; I won't lose the data within and be able to access the files as needed (I use these a lot and don't want to lose the work I've done with them). I assume it is all saved since I acces them from my iPhone, MacBook and iPad. I just want the affirmation.

And is there any way to determine and locate the data in apps like Photos and Music and YouTube to clear out so I can manage updates better. I have yet to find a useful help site or video that explains how.

Sorry if these are simple questions that anyone should know, but I have been burnt in the past for assuming how things work and turned out to be misinformed.

Thanks in advance

Jeff

First off, your questions are good questions. Let me go dive in here:

Your Photos and Music show 9GB despite of iCloud usage could be due to cached or temporary files, local thumbnails, partially downloaded content, etc. You can check the following:

For Photos:

In Settings > Photos, make sure iCloud Photos is enabled and "Optimize iPad Storage" is checked.

In Settings > General > iPad Storage > Photos. See if there are any items you can manually delete. For example delete recently deleted photos or videos manually

For Music:

Check Offline content in your Music app by going to Library > Downloaded. Long-press to delete unneeded items, e.g. if you are streaming anyways, why do you have it downloaded.

Also, similar to Photos you can optimize Storage by going to Settings > Music > Optimize Storage. Enable it to let iPadOS remove songs you haven't played recently, keeping only small previews locally.

Secondly, is it the best course of action to reset the iPad and start with a clean slate? It's not necessarily the best step, but it can give you a clear start obviously, but it also takes a lot of time to set up everything again.

I would recommend to Free up space without Resetting.

  • Delete Large Apps
  • Clear Safari Cache: Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data. Also go to Advanced > Website Data > Remove All Website Data to free up space.
  • Manage Messages: You can keep messages for a shorter time by going to Settings > Messages > Keep Messages and set it to "30 Days" to delete old attachments
  • Offload Apps Manually. Settings > General > iPad Storage. Then select an App and tap "Offload App".
  • Check Downloads: Open the Files app, go to iCloud Drive > Downloads and delete unneeded files. Also, in Safari > Downloads, clear downloaded files

Regarding deleting YouTube, OneDrive, OneNote, it won't delete your stuff if you have it synced with an account. For YouTube, it would be your Google Account, and for OneDrive and OneNote, it would be the Microsoft Account. Check the web versions of those on another device (Desktop) and you can verify if your data is stored with the Microsoft/Google account. If you don't see it there, make sure to move it over to the respective accounts before you delete.

Hope this helps. :-)

What's the difference between device storage and iCloud storage? - Apple Support

You may be well served when you make your next iPad purchase to get one with as much device storage as you can. You are going to be faced with storage issues on an iPad with only 64gb of storage. Take care.

Thank you for the great comprehensive list of steps to take towards freeing up my iPad storage. I've gone through and deleted many of my apps, most were in the kilobyte range so they didn't make much difference. However I did start deleting some of the "bloated" apps where I was able to shave off a couple of GBs. Unfortunately the two worst offenders: Photos and Music remain a combined 9GB and I store everything on iCloud.

Will probably try a reset eventually and then end getting a newer iPad with more storage at some point.

Thanks

Jeff
