Why is my iPad and iPhone unable to print wirelessly to an HL-L2370DW printer?

I have other apple devices that print over WiFi but my iPad and iPhone do not. I can still print to it using iPrint&Scan but not by just selecting print to the printer. This was not a problem in the past.

If your printer supports AirPrint - and is set-up correctly - should you continue to experience difficulties your WiFi Router may be unexpectedly failing to pass Apple Bonjour traffic on you local network - or your WiFi Router or Network Switch may be selectively blocking this (or other) device discovery protocol(s) for some client devices.

You may find that a restart of your network components will clear the problem. You’ll need to restart your network devices in the correct order. Assuming that you WiFi Router provides DNS services for your network, restart devices in this order - allowing time for devices to fully boot/restart prior to restarting other devices:

  • WiFi Router
  • Upstream wired Network Switch(es) (if any)
  • WiFi Access Points / Network Extenders
  • Other fixed infrastructure devices - such as Printers
  • Client devices (your iPad)

Restarting your iPad, after restarting other devices in the correct sequence, is most simply achieved by a restart of your Apple devices:

Force restart iPad - Apple Support

Force restart iPhone - Apple Support

Shut down or restart your Mac - Apple Support

If you continue to have difficulties, check to see if your iPad/iPhone are using the new WiFi Private Address feature. This feature is intended to provide additional privacy and security when using “public” (untrusted) WiFi networks.

Settings > WiFi > [Your WiFi Network / SSID] - tap the “i” icon - Private Address

The Private Address feature is largely unnecessary for your home WiFi network; if enabled, Private Addressing can interfere with anticipated operation of other devices, such as AirPrint/Airplay. In such circumstances, you may need to disable this feature - and can be enabled or disabled for each individual network.

Have you restarted your WiFi Router, printers and other devices, in the sequence previously suggested? A reset of your iPad's Network Settings may help:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset Network Settings

As a diagnostic exercise, you may also need to completely remove the Norton App from your iPad - and then perform a forced restart. If the problem with AirPrint is cleared, you can then reinstall Norton and re-test.

I had previously tried looking into the private address issue. We all use Norton 360 with their VPN. My private address is ‘fixed’. I looked at my son’s iPad settings and they are configured the same as mine. He is able to print to both the desk jet and the brother printers. I still cannot print to either printer. I cannot understand why his prints and mine does not. I am looking forward to continued settings. I can post all of my settings if anyone thinks that will help. I believe not that this is clearly a function of my setting. I have the same problem with my iPhone 15plus. Thanks in advance for all the help. Mick

I followed the suggestions and opened up Safari pick the document and attempted to print. I now have two printers hooked up one is a DeskJet. The other is the brother printer. They both show up and when I try to print to either one the little wheel just spins and then it says no printer selected. If I use the other printer, the same thing happens. It must be somehow the settings on my iPhone or my iPad, I can think of nothing else.

Thank you Lawrence. I have tried almost everything that you suggested before I sought out advice on this thread. I have called Brother hotline and they said it was NOT an AirPrint printer. I later found out that it WAS an AirPrint printer. I have tried all you suggest about restarting devices in order and waiting x time etc. nothings has worked. I am at least now happy I can print from my iPhone. Much more flexibility. I will continue to try and detect subtle differences in settings until I fix the iPad. Mick

I have made some progress with my problem. If you recall, I had problems printing from my iPhone and iPad to my brother printer and DeskJet HP described elsewhere. All other computers, iPads and iPhones in my house were able to print except my iPad and iPhone. I had changed a few settings and somehow had succeeded in changing what I needed to for my iPhone to print to the printers. However, my iPad is still not printing to either printer. I checked my settings and my private Wi-Fi address is fixed. Configure IP is set at automatic. Configure DNS also set at automatic. Configure proxy is off. These settings are identical on iPad and iPhone. I will keep you posted if I can succeed with the iPad. I have restarted iPad and iPhone. I might try to just restart printers as well thanks for the help. Mick
