Brother printer not working post update to 15.4.1

hi everyone - I have a 2020 M1 MacBook, works fine, connected on WLAN to 6 month old Brother DCP-L2640DW. Worked fine on 15.3, but not 15.4 - my wife's laptop is on same network, she is running an older OS and it works fine. Sooooooooo I figure it must be the driver. I delete the old one, try to install the new one - it gets most of the way through then says 'no machine found'. Brother are of course useless. I checked the private and security local network settings - they are all ok. I reset the network card on the printer - that was a problem before. Have spent an embarrassing amount of time on this - any advice, other than smashing it to pieces with a sledgehammer and posting it online? thanks

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 15.4

Troubleshooting Printer Not Working After a macOS Update:

A. Verify the Connection:

First off, see if the headphones are is even seen:

  1. Hold Down: the Option key
  2. Click: the Apple menu
  3. Choose: System Information or System Report
  4. Select: Printers
  5. Look For: this printer

B. Install Printer Firmware:

See if you can go into the screen and buttons atop the printer, and update the firmware directly on the printer. Printers that have their own screen can have firmware installed directly on the printer itself.

C. Boot in Safe Mode:

Boot Up in Safe Mode, and see if you get this while logged in it.  Go here: Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support, then, shut down the Mac, and power it back on, seeing if this has gone away. In Safe ModeLogin Items do not run at login, certain preferences are set aside, and damaged system files are then reset.

SORTED ! thanks to another post here it pointed me to the tendency of Sequoia to default to 5 GhZ router setting, not 2.4 GhZ. After some poking around that is indeed the issue - it's to do with Wifi 7 protocol and DLNA.

FIX - I had to install a wifi-bridge to the printer and now it works fine - no more messing around with printer drivers etc etc.

Apparently it costs Brother a few $ more to fix this problem with a better chip but they can't be bothered

After upgrading a Brother HL-L2460DW that I'd used that morning no longer worked. Deleted and tried to add back and now it can't be seen by the printer settings panel. It is hard wired Ethernet connection, and shows up on my router with a valid IP address and proper MAC address and device description. But in the printer settings report, the printer shows the router properly and its own IP address as 0.0.0.0 - this after a factory reset of the printer. Sounds like the printer firmware isn't talking to 15.4.1.

hi the Littles - thanks

  1. forgot to say that I cannot add the printer to the network - it. says 'cannot communicate with the printer at this time'
  2. good idea but the software says 'cannot find a machine to update' - remember my wife can print quite happily from the same machine on the same network
  3. I tried this once - no joy, but I will try it again now, why not!
