Key points of restarting in safe mode:

1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > Shut Down.
2. Wait for your Mac to shut down completely.
3. Press and hold the power button on your Mac until “Loading startup options” appears.
4. Select a volume - usually "Macintosh HD"
5. Press and hold the Shift key, then click Continue in Safe Mode.
6. The computer restarts automatically. When the login window appears, you should see “Safe Boot” in the menu bar.

Your screenshot shows that you have other mice paired to the Mac.

You're going to need to have a USB mouse on hand for this: I suggest you "Forget This Device..." on all of the mouse devices. Then re-pair the MM2W alone. Maybe there is some conflict or settings confusing going on here.

I think you may be looking in the wrong spot.

Go to Settings > Mouse

Battery percentage can be seen under your mouse name there.

Oh, yes, I see that connecting MM2W doesn't make a difference there. 🙁

There are a few things I can suggest you try:

1) Connect MM2W to the Mac with the cable and give it plenty of time to fully recharge. I think overnight would be sufficient.

2) Disconnect MM2W and "Forget This Device...", then reboot the Mac and re-pair the mouse.

3) Start up the Mac in safe mode and see if the info is displayed there. Then reboot normally and check again.

4) Connect MM2W to another Mac and see if the battery info gets displayed on that.

It *may be* that MM2W is defective and whether this is important enough to you to replace it and try another is up to you.

The area where it can be seen on my Mac is at the TOP of this MOUSE category, right under its name. In your screenshot that particular section is cut out, can you verify it’s not where I say it should be or post a screenshot of the entire mouse setting window? Ensure the mouse is showing connected in Bluetooth before checking the Mouse settings panel.

You might try connecting the Magic Mouse-2-White and then look again at the Bluetooth status.

If you're using the Apple Magic Keyboard, plug the keyboard into the iMac with the charging cable and it will behave as a wired USB keyboard.

Wireless keyboards often don't respond quickly enough to trigger the Mac to launch safe mode.
