How can I help a lost cat to find its owner using an AirTag?

a cat has been coming to my house for about a week. I got close to it and saw he has a collar. The I googled the collar and saw it has an AirTag. My phone never said that there was an AirTag. I thought maybe the battery was dead so I changed it. Now it is asking if I want to connect it to my account. I will if will send a message to the owner of AirTag. I’m afraid that I will be erasing it though. I want this cat to find it”s owner. What can I do?

Unless the owner remove this AirTag from their Apple Account, no amount of battery replacements, nor resets, will allow you to add it to your Apple ID.

If you replaced the battery, you should have heard a single sound from the tag letting you know that the replacement battery was recognized and good. That's all you had to do. Now if the owner of the tag/cat, placed the tag in "Lost Mode," and included their contact information, you would see that when you bring your iPhone near the tag. If nothing shows up, then they didn't enter any or they didn't need to as they don't think their cat is lost.

Unless you are sure that this cat is lost, then leave the tag on the collar and leave both on the cat. If it isn't actually lost it should make it way back home.

The bottom line is that if the owner did not leave contact information, there is no means available to you to locate the owner of the tag. If you are truly concerned about this cat, take it to your local vet, and should the cat be chipped, they may be able to track down its owner. Otherwise, take it to your local animal shelter.

how many times did the AirTag beep when putting in the battery?

  • no beep - the battery has not made contact (cover not fully seated) or coated/bitter-coated cell that AirTag won’t read (usually Duracell batteries)
  • single beep - normal power on. The tag automatically reconnects to the owners device
  • FIVE BEEP SEQUENCE - first 4 beeps are identical the fifth is a different tone. That tells the AirTag you’ve reset it and it’s broadcasting a fresh pairing mode signal, ready to be claimed by ANY IPHONE

if the five beeps occur just bring the cat to the local hound and see if the cat has an ID on it that they can scan and give it to the owner (it’s the least you can do)
