When my apple tv unit is turned on there is video and no audio. The audio is somehow connected through air play. I have tried for hours to resolve this issue. I have no idea why this situation exist. It works great through the Roku apple tv app, but I cannot access my apps.
Please try setting Apple TV box to output audio to “TV Speakers” (= over HDMI), then also setting the TV to output its audio to the receiver.

have you tried to go into the appletv settings and setting the audio to stereo rather than some 5.1 surround if you do not have such a setup connected.
