Why do my windows disappear when I click on Mac?

When I click on my desktop, any open windows fly off the screen. How do I prevent this? It has been happening for a while (not after any recent updates as far as I can tell).

I tried everything below, but the windows keep flying off when I click on the Home Screen.

Thoughts?

  5. Look for "Show Desktop" — toggle it off.

 Step 2: Disable Hot Corners

  1. Stay in System Settings.

  2. Click Desktop & Dock from the sidebar.

  3. Scroll all the way down and click Hot Corners (lower-right area).

  4. Inspect all 4 corners — if any say “Desktop”, click it and choose “-” (None).

  5. Click Done.

Step 3: Optional – Disable the F11 Shortcut

  1. In System Settings, go to Keyboard.

  2. Click Keyboard Shortcuts (button at the top).

  3. Select Mission Control on the left.

  4. Uncheck “Show Desktop”, or click on it to assign a different key.

How to Turn Off Stage Manager (macOS 15.4.1)

  1. Click the Control Center icon in the top-right menu bar (two toggle switches).

  2. Click Stage Manager.

  3. If it’s blue or highlighted, click it to turn it off.

    • If it's already off, skip this step.

OR

  1. Open System Settings.

  2. Click Desktop & Dock in the sidebar.

  3. Scroll to the Stage Manager section.

  4. Toggle Stage Manager to Off.

macOS may still be treating your desktop click as a trigger for Mission Control behavior, or a third-party app (e.g., Magnet, Rectangle, BetterSnapTool, etc.) is managing window positions.

Try This:

  1. Go to System Settings > Desktop & Dock.

  2. Scroll down to Mission Control.

  3. Turn off:

  • “Automatically rearrange Spaces based on most recent use”

  • “When switching to an application, switch to a Space with open windows for the application”

    • “Group windows by application”

Then:

4. Open System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts.

5. Click Mission Control — confirm nothing is set to Show Desktop or Move windows to left/right side of screenusing mouse/keyboard shortcuts.

Do you have Magnet, Rectangle, BetterSnapTool, DisplayBuddy, or any other window management utilitiesinstalled?

If so, they may be actively re-arranging or minimizing windows when the desktop is clicked.

Try This:

  • Temporarily quit or disable any such app (check your menu bar or Applications > Utilities).

A. Check Your Menu Bar (Top-Right of Screen)

Look at the top-right corner of your screen — do you see icons for any of these or similar apps?

  • Magnet

  • Rectangle

  • BetterSnapTool

  • DisplayBuddy

  • Mission Control Plus

  • Moom

  • Window Magnet

  • Window Manager

If yes:

  1. Click on the icon.

  2. Look for a “Quit,” “Disable,” or “Turn Off” option in the dropdown.

  3. Quit the app and then test whether clicking the desktop still causes windows to fly away.

B. Check Your Login Items (Apps That Auto-Launch at Startup)

  1. Open System Settings.

  2. Go to General > Login Items.

  3. Under “Open at Login”, look for any window management apps.

  4. Select any suspicious apps and click the minus (-) button to remove them.

  5. Restart your Mac and test again.
