How to restore missing Finder sidebar location section on MacBook Air?

All locations (disks and external drives) that are supposed to be in their own section of Finder disappeared and began appearing under the Favorites section.

I tried updating Sequoia. Didn't work. Tried Safe Mode. Also didn't work.

Any suggestions?

Hover your cursor on the Favorites header in the sidebar.

See the caret ( > ) to the right of the header? Click that so it turns down to show the items that live there.

EDIT - hmmm... a re-read of your post has enlightened me to the error of my initial response above. Sorry.

If you check FInder > Settings... > Sidebar, are the items under Locations check marked?

Is the caret to the right of the Locations heading turned down?

Thank you. Yes the items under Locations are check-marked in Finder sidebar settings. I thought I implied that, but I should've been clearer.

Okay, now there is one item displayed under locations. But only one. The caret next to Locations is down. I have an external drive that is appearing under Favorites, not Locations. Before this began happening, it always appeared under locations. Every external drive did.

I covered names in the screenshots, but everything else is as it appears to me.

I can't get the caret by Locations to show in the screenshot. It's there and pointed down when I take it. But when I open the file, it doesn't appear.

Toggle each of those two boxes until a full check mark is seen and try connecting the ext drive(s) again.

And if you don't wish to see those drives in the Favorites sections, then with the drive connected simply drag that icon out and away from the sidebar and release it. It should disappear. The Favorites section can be customized with just about any drive or folder icon you wish.
