Which MacBook Pro is better for 4K video editing with FCPX on a budget?

Hello Community,

I am considering buying a MacBook Pro for video editing with FCPX while on the run. I edit 4K video files at apple pro res 422. My projects are around 30 minutes long with lots of files. My projects are decently sized with multiple layers but no too much graphics or 3D. I am on a budget so I am looking to get a second hand MacBook. My concern is making sure I will not have a problem with lag, frozen screen, or shutting down while editing. I am considering 2 different MacBooks and would love to see what the pro's in the community would recommend. On one hand I am looking at the MacBook Pro 2.4GHz Intel 8 Core i9, 1TB SSD, 64 GB of RAM, and AMD Radeon Pro 5600M 8GB vs. MacBook Pro M4 Pro, 512GB SSD, 14 Total Cores, and 24GB of RAM. Would the i9 be faster and more efficient for this type of editing because of the 64 GB of RAM or would the M4 Pro be more efficient with the newer processor but with the 24GB of RAM? Which would you get and why as a video editor on the run editing 4K footage and projects?

Thank you!

Thank you BobTheFisherman,

My apps are basically FCPX. And yes I agree with as much RAM as I can get, but the two options I am looking at is that i9 with 64 GB of RAM vs. the M4 with 24. Very confusing when trying to compare.

I would not buy the older i9 due to its age. Mac computers are no longer supported after about 5 years. Third party app developers no longer support older computers. Obtaining service for your Apple product after an expired warranty - Apple Support

I am not familiar with your app requirements wrt RAM. Personally I would not buy any computer today with less than 32GB RAM and 1TB storage.

There are too many unknowns for us us users to advise you which Mac to buy. One is an intel Mac and one is a silicon Mac. We have no idea if your apps are compatible with these options. And, how old is the intel Mac? I think these were last available 4 or 5 years ago which means support may be soon lacking.

Whichever you buy, get as much storage and RAM you can afford. And make sure you buy from an authorized Apple dealer not the black market.
