I'm trying to decide if I can upgrade my IPAD and add Microsoft 365 Personal vs Microsoft 365 Office (which has limited capabilities for a writer), or do I need to purchase a Mac Book .

The Office 365 App for iPad is a “cut-down” single install App; this App does not replicate full MS Office functionality. However, there are individual Microsoft Apps for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook etc. intended for iPad. All of the MS App’s require an active Microsoft 365 Subscription.

It really depends on what your habits and needs are. I use a single Excel Spreadsheet daily that I edit and save in iCloud. When I travel I used to take my MacBook Air however when it was time to replace the MBA I bought an iPad Air and just use Numbers on it to edit my spreadsheet which works perfectly.
However, if you trade docs with co-workers and do this often then it would be wise to buy a subscription of Office 365. It really depends on your usage!
