How do I resolve inaccurate location-based security messages on my iPhone?

I sometimes get ‘security’ messages asking me to confirm a log-in from my iPhone in some location that is anywhere from 70 to nearly 300 miles away from where I am actually located. While I have read that this may occur, surely in these days of frequent ID theft, the fact that Apple allows this kind of basic error to occur should be deemed as unacceptable? If it is inevitable due to system limitations of some kind, then the “feature” should surely be abandoned. Does anyone have a view on this subject?

See the following from Two-factor authentication for Apple Account - Apple Support

The notification might include a map of the approximate location of the sign-in attempt. This location is based on the new device’s IP address and might reflect the network that it’s connected to, rather than the exact physical location. If you know that you’re the person trying to sign in but don't recognize the location, you can still tap Allow and view the verification code. If you’re not the one trying to sign in, tap Don’t Allow to block the sign-in attempt.
