I would buy another block but feels like spending £40 on a block is a bit over the top

If you buy from Apple, you have 14 days to return the product for a full refund, if the new power adapter does not solve the issue.

Check the Battery Settings on your iPhone to look at the charging graphs. If you see a lot of orange color, that means that the current power supply is not providing enough power to the iPhone.

Most of the times this is happening when using non official assecoires, have you tried to use an original cable and an original brick to see if the issues persist
