Why is my Apple Watch battery life varying so drastically day to day?

Today I've had my Apple watch on for 16 hours and my battery now shows 56%. Only two days ago, the watch was dead off after 12 hours. I wouldn't be shocked by a variation from day to day of 5 or 10%, but his is closer to 100%. What could be causing that? (Yes, I've got all the usual batter hogs turned off: aways on display, background app refresh, etc.)

If cellular, and you leave your iiPhone at home, and you are in an area with weak cellular signals, the cellular radio has to expend more power to keep in touch with the cell towers.

If other times you are in areas with stronger cellular signals, the cellular radio does not need to work as hard.

If your iPhone is near, then the cellular radio is not used, and the Apple Watch uses the iPhone's radios.

As others have mentioned, doing things that involve activating the GPS radio more frequently, such as using a walking, running, bicycle exercise app.

My watch was charged and updated to 18.5 when I went to sleep. Woke up and it was down to 40%. Normally I can make it 22 hours before needing to charge. Why is the battery draining so fast after the update?

If your watch updated overnight, you may see decreased battery life the next day. That's normal. It's doing stuff behind the scenes. It should settle down in a day or so.

The current version of watchOS is 11.5. 18.5 is the current version of iOS.
