iPadOS 17.7.7 update has really caused issues to my iPad Pro

This update has really caused issues to my iPad Pro 10.5 inch. Some apps have lost all state every time they are reopened, and revert back to their initial initialisation screens. Programs like procreate show their example artworks. Some games have lost all progress, and apps like YouTube ask me to log in each time.

I have tried a full reset / restore, to no avail, but that added a new issue which now once a day I am asked to log in with my password rather than Touch ID as "I have recently changed my password". I downgraded to 17.7.6 to find the restore for the iPad does not work, so had to reinstall 17.7.7 before restoring.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thank you StephC74

I tried your suggestion about 4-5 hours ago, and so far it is looking positive, not had anything reset itself or boot me out yet.

I can't pretend I understand why or how it works, but it does appear to have worked for me, the morning will confirm or otherwise

"Restart iPad using the top button and either of the volume buttons. Slide to power off and then wait 30 seconds before powering on.

Toggle your iCloud settings. Settings, tap your name, icloud

Temporarily disable iCloud drive and iCloud keychain

Restart your device and then re-enable iCloud Drive and iCloud Keychain.

All sorted this end.

I took the opportunity to complete a factory restore - luckily, I had two backups on ICloud - one from 17.7.6 and the other from 17.7.7 .

Using the older one, everything restored within an hour, and with the bonus of gaining back almost 30gb of storage space.

Good on Apple to resolve so quickly - shame they have not apologised however to those affected and accepted that on this occasion, they went wrong. Good on them as well for continuing to support my 2017 10.5" Ipad

iOS 17.7.6 is still signed. I just helped my sister with her old 10.5 inch iPad Pro flash the iOS 17.7.6 with the help of 3uTools while preserving her data, because iTunes didn't even recognise her iPad (she has a Windows laptop). iOS 17.7.7 bricked her iPad in recovery mode after re-installing because of all of the setting and notification problems even though it was compatible according to Apple. We used 3uTools to remove outdated iTunes drivers even though she has the latest iTunes version, flashed iOS 17.7.6 and it worked. Step up Apple - the comments we got from Apple Support were an insult. I have used Apple devices exclusively for 30 years. These problems were known from iOS 17.7.7 Beta and you published it anyway. We need a fix for iOS 17.7.7 NOW!

All contributors here, that have not done so already, will help with resolving the current situation by independently submitting a Bug Report to Apple using Apple's Feedback Portal. As already outlined within this thread, for iPad and iPadOS, the Feedback page can be accessed here:

Feedback - iPad - Apple

When submitting your Bug Report, please ensure that you include details of your iPad model and installed version of iPadOS within the body-text of your report along with details of the problem. Do not rely upon the pick-list - as this rarely includes the current version of iPadOS. If the pick-list doesn't yet offer the current version, choose the nearest available option from the list; be sure to include the actual version (iPadOS 17.7.7) within the body of your report. Consider including a link to this discussion thread.

Every Bug Report counts. Unless sufficient reports are submitted (with adequate detail), Apple may not assign resources to investigate and correct the issue. As such, if anyone hasn't yet submitted a report themselves you are less likely to see a fix being prioritised.

In addition [i.e., not as a substitute] to submitting a Bug Report, you might also consider seeking assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page; you can initiate and manage your support cases from Apple devices using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-support/id1130498044

For those that have already submitted feedback to Apple, it doesn't harm to re-submit. In conclusion, if those with issues or difficulties don't engage and themselves report the issue directly to Apple, don't be surprised if the problem is not addressed to your satisfaction. Complaints posted within the Apple Support Community (ASC) will not be seen or acted upon by Apple.

How do we do that?

Full reporting details were included within my initial reply to this thread. To save you looking through the two pages of replies to this thread...

If you have encountered a bug you, and anyone else that encounter the issue, should submit a Bug Report via Apple's Product Feedback portal.  For iPad and iPadOS:

From one of the other threads:

Since we updated an iPad (6th generation) to iPadOS 17.7.7 yesterday (May 12, 2025), we have found that many apps, including apps we previously released as an App Store developer, are broken to various degrees. The apps seem to forget their states, such as configuration parameters and login credentials. These problems did not exist in iPadOS 17.7.6 before. Neither do they exist on other models of iPhones and iPads running earlier versions of iOS and iPadOS we use for testing.

Circumstantial evidences point to iPadOS 17.7.7 itself as the culprit. In order to dig out more evidence, we used Xcode 16.2 to debug our own apps, which like many other apps, use NSUserDefaults (or UserDefaults in Swift) as a convenient way to store small pieces of persistent data, such as user preferences and app settings. For example,

    NSUserDefaults *usrDefaults = [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults];

It turns out that the value returned for any key of usrDefaults is nil. That explains why our apps forget many of their setting parameters. What a bummer!

Let's hope that Apple will release a quick fix (in iPadOS 17.7.8) ASAP. In the meanwhile, don't upgrade to iOS 17.7.7 if you haven't

Developers have been warned for over a year that they must include the reasons for using NSUserDefaults as it could be used as a fingerprinting measure to identify the device or user. Login details should not be included in the NSUserDefaults and for those that are having to re-enter their login, that is most likely the cause. I cannot confirm this is the reason, but based on what this developer has found out, it appears they have ignored these warnings or there may be others as well.

I don't claim this is the reason for what users are seeing, but being a Developer I am aware that enforcement of these policies occur in OS updates. And for those looking for on OS update to fix that, it is not likely going to happen and the update would come from the app developer that is using the API inappropriately. Again, this is just based on what this developer has posted on the results they have experienced with their app. While this information pertains to Developers, they may have finally enforced on runtime the use of NSUserDefaults:

This API has the potential of being misused to access device signals to try to identify the device or user, also known as fingerprinting. Regardless of whether a user gives your app permission to track, fingerprinting is not allowed. When you use this API in your app or third-party SDK (an SDK not provided by Apple), declare your usage and the reason for using the API in your app or third-party SDK’s PrivacyInfo.xcprivacy file.

UserDefaults | Apple Developer Documentation

Your app or third-party SDK must declare one or more approved reasons that accurately reflect your use of each of these APIs and the data derived from their use. You may use these APIs and the data derived from their use for the declared reasons only.

iPadOS 17.7.7 has a number of significant issues - many of which you will find described within recent threads in this Support Community.

Apple has withdrawn the iPadOS 17.7.7 update pending release of a fix. While Apple has not issued a timescale, you might reasonably anticipate that a revised update will be released soon.

To add insult to injury, the Apple feedback form will not even offer iPadOS 17.7.7 as the version you are currently running, it stops at 17.7.6.

This is completely unacceptable, Apple. How you let this go to public release witjout noticong such a serious bug is beyond me.

As already outlined in an earlier reply, if iPadOS 17.7.7 is not yet listed, choose the nearest from the available options (iPadOS 17.7.6?).

Notwithstanding the above, iPadOS 17.7.7 has been withdrawn pending release of a new update:
