  • The Apple TV+ is a subscription service for watching shows and movies provided by Apple that has a monthly fee.
  • The Apple TV box is a physical device with many features including the Apple TV+ app to watch movies/shows. You do not have to have the Apple TV box to watch movies on your TV if you already have a smart TV that includes the app. The Apple TV box is a one time purchase. Along with the Apple TV+ app on the box that does require a subscription, you can also download other apps/games on the box to view on your TV or sync Photos/Music to the device to make them available on your TV.
  • If you do not want the Apple TV+ service to watch those Movies/Shows, then you can cancel that subscription and continue to use the Apple TV box for the other features that are provided and you will not have to pay a monthly fee.

There is no charge for using your Apple TV 128GB device. The charge comes when you choose to subscribe to Apple’s Apple TV+ streaming service. Apple TV+ provides access to to Apple’s own content it produces. Apple TV+ applies only to Apple produced content, not any movie you find. Apple TV+ is not like Netflix or Max.

To whom are you paying $9/mo? And for what content?

The Apple TV box is a stand alone device which offers access to many apps and services.

One such service is Apple's TV+ subscription which offers original content produced by Apple. You do not have to pay for this if you do not want access to that.

Commercial Movies and TV shows can be purchased or rented separately from the iTunes Store and do not require that subscription.

You can also download apps for 3rd party services such as Netflix, Amazon, HBO etc... those require their own subscription not related to the TV+ subscription.
