Why is it so difficult to download photos taken with a non-Apple digital camera to Apple Photos? Is there a work around? It took my apple advisor 1.5 hours to enable me to accomplish this.

I think that pretty much sums it up! I prefer a card reader when a camera has removable memory. While I use Image Capture with stubborn cameras, with an SD card on a Mac, the pictures show in the Finder--you just drag 'em where you want 'em.

What's the problem. You plug it in or plug the memory card into a connected card reader, launch image capture, and import the photos... I've never had an issue with this.
Simplify downloading photos from a digital camera.
