I have seen a post from 2023 that indicated that you should never install these third-party apps on a Mac. Is this still relevant today with new Malware coming out all the time?

Yes! That is still relevant today. Keep your Mac OS updated and let XProtect do its job without any interference by these apps that will conflict with your OS and slow your machine down without providing any additional benefit.
Yes. These days I would give the same advice to people running Windows as well.
