I've been having this trouble for some months now, where my keyboard layout doesn't allow me to input square brackets. Very inconvenient when writing code.
In the keyboard preview I can see that these seem to be disable. Is there some configuration I have to do here?

I use alt-gr + 8 and 9, and I had the issue in all apps.
Suddenly this now works again after running an update, as well as all other functionality related to holding the alt button. Maybe I've hit a shortcut that changed my layout or maybe it was a bug. Thanks anyway!

Are you talking about an external windows keyboard you are using? Apple laptops don't have alt-gr, just two option keys that both do the same thing.
In any case, good news that the problem is no longer present! Let us know if it returns.
What keystrokes are you using for square brackets? Is nothing at all produced when you type them? Does this happen in all apps—Safari, Mail, messages, notes?
