Major sound issues when connected to monitor via Thunderbolt

I have an M1 MBP on MacOS Sequoia connected to a monitor (Dell UltraSharp U2723QE) via a USB-C to DP thunderbolt cable. While KVM functions work great and the MBP can see the monitor as a sound output (and its speakers connected via 3.5mm audio jack), sound defaults to the laptop speakers. Not only does this happen, but when attempting to force the switch to the monitor as an audio output, songs skip indefinitely and don't play, and YouTube videos immediately scrub to the end as if the skip button was being pressed. This has persisted across multiple MacOS variations and only fixed temporarily by restarting the laptop while connected to the USB-C cable.
