Animated gifs still slow down Safari

There were some threads a few years ago on this subject, but it doesn't seem to be resolved so far. Everytime I get a page with one or more animated gifs, Safari completely becomes unusable for up to several minutes.

Anyone knows if there is a way to turn this off, or is there another solution?

I ma currently using Safari Version 5.0.1 (5533.17.8, r65825), on 10.5.8, PPC

iMac G5 1.8 GHz, Mac OS X (10.5)

I really don't think this has anything to do with user settings (cache, prefs, etc), but is a problem with Safari itself

I doubt that. I have never seen that error in safari 3, 4 or 5.

Is your Java up to date? Are their any Software Updates available that you haven't installed?

Can you provide a link to a page where the animated gifs don't work?

HI,

Logging into another user account is to see if the same problems exists in Safari there is not meant to correct anything. If the same thing happens when you launch Safari in that account, then it's a system wide problem, not just your user account. It's just done for troubleshooting.

If it's just your user account that's effected, quit Safari if it's open. You must quit Safari from the Safari Menu Bar first before deleting these files. Open Java Preferences (Applications/Utilities). Select the Network tab. Now click these tabs: Delete Files / Restore Defaults

Now go back to the General tab. Make sure where you see: Run applets. The "Within the browser process" is selected.

Quit Java Preferences. Relaunch Safari.

See if that helps.

I've had the problem of moving GIF images lagging out Safari multiple seconds at a time for a couple years. I believe the issue started with the switch from Safari 2 to Safari 3, and it was never resolved. There were lots of suggested possible fixes on the forums from users but over the months none of them worked, and I've just learned to live with it.

If it really bothers you, just use Firefox. I haven't because I don't like Firefox for other reasons, but moving GIFs work perfectly fine without any program stalls whatsoever there.

I'm on 10.4.11 and Safari 4.1 by the way.

I agree, it's a very bad site. Not one that I usually visit, but I included it just as an illustration. And I don't even like them. 😟

Problem is that animated gifs sometimes are present on a website, and Safari stalls for no immediate apparent reason. I really like Safari for everything else, so rather not use another browser.

Hi Koen

that site loads slowly here, due some large file sizes, but doesn't freeze at all, this on an mbp 2.4GHz running 10.6.4. It's possible that a ppc mac and/or10.5.8 might struggle rather more.

Probably there's nothing we can suggest to ease this - if someone else with a similar setup to you says it's fine for them... then perhaps there is.
