Question

Force bookmarks to open in new tab?

Is there a way to force bookmarks (either from the bookmarks menu or bar) to open in a new tab by default, vice the current tab? I know a Command+click will do this, I would like to do it by default.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.4), iPhone, iPod Nano

HI,

Not sure if you can do that but you can have Tabs open when you launch Safari.

From Safari's Bookmarks menu select "Add Bookmark Folder." A new "untitled folder" will appear in the left-hand side, highlighted and ready to be named.

You should already have separate bookmarks for each of your six desired sites. Create them if you don't. Copy each of the desired bookmarks to the newly created folder.

Under Safari Preferences / General / "New windows open with:" select "Choose tabs folder..."

From the popup menu select the newly created folder and press Choose.

That is...handy...but I don't have any six desired sites that I want to open. What I'm looking for is to change the default behavior in Safari such that any bookmark I select (from either the bookmarks bar or the bookmarks window) will open in a new tab, instead of "overwriting" the current tab.

Doubt you can change the default behavior in Safari without a third party add-on such as Glims.

I have Glims installed (in fact, it was a post of yours on a similar thread that prompted me to check it out), but it does not include that functionality either. Is there no setting/tweak that will do this?

HI,

Have you tried using a difference browser such as Firefox? You may have more leeway for Tabs with Firefox.

I am switching from Firefox to Safari. This behavior was fairly easily attained in Firefox, and it is one of a small number of things I want to carry over.

One other idea might be to check VersionTracker or MacUpdate for a third party plugin. Also, from your Safari Menu Bar click Safari / Safari Extensions Gallery. Might be an extension that can help with this.
