How do I prevent Finder tabs from changing when switching desktops in macOS?
If I have Finder open on Desktop 1, looking at the second of three open tabs, I switch focus to a different application on Desktop 2, I then select the Finder icon in the dock, focus will return to Finder on Desktop 1 but it will have switched to a different Finder tab (i.e. the first or third tab).
(note: this issue occurs when Finder is assigned to a specific desktop or none , if I have Finder on all Desktops the issue can not occur as I would never switch desktops to get to Finder)
The following are the steps required to reproduce the issue:
- I open Finder on Desktop 1 with three tabs, lets call them Tab-1, Tab-2, and Tab-3
- The active tab is Tab-2 before I change to a different application on Desktop 2
- If I select the Finder icon from the Dock (and occasionally if I Cmd+Tab) I will return to Finder on Desktop 1 but the active tab will be either Tab-1 or Tab-3.
- If I select Tab-2 and repeat these steps, when focus return to Finder it will change to the same tab as before (i.e. if it switches to Tab-3 when focus returns once, it will switch to Tab-3 every time provided I don't open/close any other tabs)
I've attempted everything I've been able to find online for similar issues including:
- Reseting all Finder settings to new by deleting the config files
- Booting into Safe Mode and logging in as a different user
The issue has persisted despite my best efforts, I'd really appreciate any guidance because I'm not sure where to go from here!
P.S. The only way I can prevent the issue from occurring is to assign Finder to all desktops but I greatly dislike how cluttered this leaves all my desktops (plus this doesn't fix the bug, it just avoids it)
P.P.S There is a similar issue reported here, however, in their case the issue also occurs when they between applications on the same desktop:
