depending on the imac model then you will need a thunderbolt 3/4/5 cable which use usb-c connectors

Adapters for the Thunderbolt or USB-C port on your Mac - Apple Support


if it's an old imac then you will need a thunderbolt 1/2 cable which use minidisplayport connectors


you connect it by plugging the cable into the imac and the other end into the external drive you wish to connect
