How do I fix 'Your password is required to enable touch ID' every time I lock my screen on Mac?

After delaying Sequoia update the maximum I could, I decided to give it a go, since then, my Touch ID became useless, since EVERY time I lock my screen I have to re-type the password. I always get the message saying at the title.

Ps: The Touch ID works fine, I use it instead of typing password to sign-in to websites (Macbook unlocked)

Sorry if this is too obvious, but for some reason maybe "use touch id to unlock your mac" has been deselected.

Make sure that all the settings are correct in System Settings->Touch ID & Password:

From this perspective there are two viable options

Option One

Start Over from Scratch on your own

For Apple Silicon computer >> Use Disk Utility to erase a Mac with Apple silicon.

Always make a Time Machine Backup  before  proceeding

Even better, have two recent backups before going forwards

This is in-case the first backup should fail and they do

Keep the computer in this state without any installations of any Third Party Software - Full Stop

Then, Test if the Touch ID functions as per designed by Apple

If it does work correctly, this would be a good indicator the original issue is related to some piece of Third Party software presently used on the computer

Which software? Hard to tell as the operating system has been heavily modified by a lot of third party software

Option Two

Have the computer evaluated by the Professionals who have the Special Hardware Software and Expertise to diagnose the issue and offer possible solutions

Make an Appointment at the Apple Genius Bar

Be prepared as the Apple Technician will probably insist on wiping the drive and installing a clean version of the Operating System - Normal

They too will probably Test this Touch ID malfunction before they will consider further evaluation for a possible Hardware Issue

No, good guess, but that is not the problem.

To skip the Q&A session, just download the Application Etrecheck directly from the Developer.

It’s a diagnostic tool that doesn’t change your computer at all. It gives you a clear and easy-to-read list of both your hardware and software

You can get it for free or pay for extra features. And don’t worry, the report won’t reveal any personal information.

Once you’re done, just copy and paste the full report using the Additional Text Icon.

Lastly - should you decide to use and post the Report now or at a later time, we are willing to have a very close look and offer some insights

Really, every time?

Then you may want to check, if your Mac has restarted during the sleep period, or if someone tried to unlock your Mac while you have been away.

You need to enter your password, after a restart or five failed attempts to unlock it with a finger print, or a sleep period of 48 hours or longer, see: Use Touch ID on Mac - Apple Support

  • "If you still have to enter your password: For security, you need to enter your password when you start your Mac. Sometimes you need to enter your password to continue using Touch ID. For example, users must re-enter their password every 48 hours and after five incorrect fingerprint attempts."

It seems to me that you are not just locking the screen, but logging out.

Please confirm if you are logged in and choosing (Apple menu)->Lock Screen, does it require you to enter the password?

Also, if you leave your mac for a certain period of time, it may be logging you out automatically.

Go to System Settings->Privacy & Security, click Advanced... at the bottom, and make sure that this is off:

Just to backup the original poster, this happens to me, too. I'm running Sequoia 15.4.1.

Every time I lock my MacBook Pro, or every time I turn on screen saver, I get the message that my password is required to enable TouchID.

Touch ID works fine for ApplePay and for logging in to various websites. Just doesn't work when logging in the the MacBook.

Also, I used to use my Apple Watch to login, but now that does not work for login but the Apple Watch works fine on the MacBook for ApplePay and other website logins.

To reply all the topics

  • The "Log out automatically after inactivity" is off
  • On Lock Screen session, all the "Start Screen Saver When inactive", "Turn display off..."and "Require password after..." are set to "Never"
  • The "Use Touch ID to unlock you MAC" is active, I always reseted it, and even reset all my fingerprints configured to it
  • About the EtreCheck report, here's the output:

About the file: It seems it worked, I left the PC the whole night locked and it didn't ask for my password this morning

About the ram: I have like 80+ tabs opened on browser and most of the times I leave the softwares I work (developing) running (usually 6 different processes), and it's easier (for a lazy person) to just leave them there than everyday having to start them again

Thank you very much!
