I have a month old Iphone 16e, (this is my 4th Iphone) and this is draining much faster than any of my previous phones.
for example, I wake at 6.30 with the phone at 100%. 15 min just reading FB posts , checking the latest 10 overnight emails. quick check of the weather, 2 messenger messages and the phone is down to 88%
as i'm not a heavy user, this seems quite excessive to me
any thoughts ?

Delete FB/Messenger and compare your results. Apple shows you which apps are consuming your battery in settings so you know which ones they are and can make that choice yourself. The developer of apps can use Background Processes and additional activity that may use significantly more battery. Meta apps are known for building your Social Graph from data collected about you to sell to advertisers and will use you battery to do that. Check the Privacy Page for FB in the App Store, and you will see what kind of data FB is using and you may find it very informative..

You can see what Apps are using the most battery power by doing Settings > Battery. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen. I suspect it is the Facebook app and FB Messenger.
If that does not show a greedy app or give you peace of mind, I suggest you have Apple evaluate your phone. You are still under Apple standard one-year warranty.
