Assuming you have iCloud backups enabled, backups will happen over-night when the device is connected to power and wifi. You also need sufficient iCloud storage available to back up.
If you have not purchased additional iCloud storage, it's likely that the 5 GB included free with your account is not enough.
If you don't have it enabled, then the phone will back up to your computer when you plug it in and sync the device. Again, assuming you have enough storage available on the computer.
