iPad in the lecture hall, how to project wirelessly?

I want to use powerpoint presentations in a university lecture hall. In the podiums of most of our lecture halls there are desktop computers that connect to a projector.

What apps are there that will allow me to show a powerpoint presentation on my iPad while lecturing, annotate the presentation in real time during the lecture, and connect the iPad to the podium computer WIRELESSLY so that the presentation will be projected to the lecture hall screen for the students?

I know how to connect the iPad to a projector via a cable, but I am hoping to avoid a long umbilicus to the podium as I am lecturing.

I think your best option would be a VNC client on the iPad while running the presentation on the podium computer.

Tnx for suggestion, Etresoft. I'll look into VNC. But it sounds a bit dicey. Any suggestions for apps to project Powerpoint presentations and annotate in real time? (ie. forget about wireless connections for the time being). I'm learning that some apps don't display on iPad simultaneously with the projected image, some apps have difficulty using a VGA cable, some apps don't allow even simple ppt animations, etc etc. Is the iPad ready for such an application as I am proposing (in the lecture hall)?

Actually, your ONLY option is to get an app like Desktop Connect or LogMeIn Ignition, as suggested by Etresoft. You will in fact be working on your desktop device via a wireless connection from your iPad. There will be a slight response delay and some clumsiness in the touch controls due to that delay, but it will work. Ideal? No. But it's your only shot.
