how can i safely remove the usb stick from my macbook before disconnecting it

If you are referring to the warning you get when you simply pull through stick, the correct way is to “eject” the stick before you remove it.
Right click on the USB stick and select “eject <stick name>", then you may remove it from the port. Removing the stick before ejecting can cause data corruption.
