SD card/ external devices not visible in the Mac mini's Finder running macOS Sequoia 15.5

This has always been an issue although I rarely use external connect. On occasion when I connect a GPS the software/app will read it. But I have inserted a micro SD card in a portable reader connect to the Mac but a USB (old style) and nothing is visible in the Finder locations menu. I have all of the Finder viewing preferences ticked. I am reluctant to buy an "Apple card reader" in case this isn't the problem. The card reader I have is an Anker, USB 3.0 multi card reader, the light comes on when it is connected

Make sure the card reader is plugged directly into the MM, not a hub of any type. If the problem persists, then restart the computer in Safe Mode and then restart normally. Finally, are any of the following types of third party apps installed on the computer:

  • Antivirus
  • Cleaning
  • Security
  • VPN
  • Maintenance

If you have ANY of these types of apps installed, please uninstall per the developers instructions, restart in Safe Mode, then restart normally and test again.

The card reader light stays on constantly. I have tried the micro SD card in a full size SD card carrier in another slot in the reader, it still didn’t register on the Finder menu

1) Test the Anker USB-A Card Reader plugged into the Mac mini using a USB-C to USB-A adapter.

2) Test the Anker USB-A Card Reader and SD cards plugged into a different Mac or PC.

3) Get and test a new USB-C Multi Card Reader with the Mac mini.

Maybe that micro SD card is not making a good connection in the Anker reader...?

Try testing some different micro SD or an SD card in the Anker card reader.

Does the light on the Anker stay steady or blink when it makes a card to Mac connection...?

Try seating the card in the reader and then plug the reader into the Mac mini.

I have a couple of after-market multi card readers that blink when cards are recognized by the Mac.

Some brands and types of cards take considerable force to firmly seat in the readers.

Some brands and types of cards can take 15 to 30 seconds to be recognized.

After you have uninstalled the VPN and AV apps using the Developers instructions then download FindAnyFile (the free version) and have it search for the names of the apps and remove them. For example if you use CleanMyMac then search for:

  • CleanMyMac
  • MacPaw

or if you use Nord VPN search for:

  • Nord

Moving forward Mac OS does not require nor does it benefit in ANY way by installing any of the types of apps I mentioned above. All Mac OS needs in order to remain secure, fast and stable is to simply keep Mac OS up-to-date and restart your computer about 1x per week. Other than that please leave Mac OS alone unless you want a slow unstable (like you currently have) system.
