Low transfer speeds between iPad Pro and Mac Mini M4

Hello all,

I use my iPad to record videos which I then need to transfer to my Mac Mini M4.

I find the transfer speed (via USB, even using a TB4 cable) to be very slow, around 75MB/s or 600Mbps.

I understand that the TB4 speeds are unrealistic on the iPad but people say the iPad could reach 10Gbps with an external SSD so I don't understand why I cannot transfer at 10Gbps directly to my Mac Mini.

Right now I am getting more or less USB2 speeds.

Can someone confirm this is normal and/or offer any ideas on how to improve on that?

Have you tried to restart both of the devices to see if the issues persist?

Try using the back ports of your Mac mini. They have Thunderbolt 4/5 (Depending on the Configuration) Which is faster than normal USB-C.

This has now been confirmed by a friend who has a similar setup - iPad Pro M1 an M1 Max MacBook Pro.

I struggle to believe that all I can get between two Apple devices boasting 40Gbps is less than 1 Gigabit.

Indeed, my Mini has TB 4 at the back. I tried with a certified TB4 cable at the back - same result.

My Mini can do TB4 speeds with an SSD. But not with an iPad. I understand TB4 is basically a fairy tale with the iPad Pro M1 - but I also understand you are supposed to see 10Gbps, not 0.6Gbps.

I open the iPad on Finder, click on Files, find the videos and drag and drop to my local storage.

I've also tried Airdrop (wifi disabled to make sure it was via cable).

I've tried a certified TB4 cable at the back, also various other cables both at the back and at the front. The outcome is always the same unfortunately.

What method (AirDrop, 3rd Party Software etc.) are you using to transfer data from the iPad Pro to the Mac mini?
