Lacking the possibility of damage, the first thing to suspect is a swelling battery. That is an emergency situation because bad batteries swell at a very rapid rate and with enough force to render the computer irreparable. They require an immediate evaluation by Apple.

This is my checklist of things that can indicate a swollen battery:

•Unexpected trackpad and/or keyboard behavior.

•The gap between the display and the deck is not even when the display is closed.

•The gap between the bottom plate and chassis is uneven in places.

•Some of the screws that hold the bottom plate have popped out.

•The trackpad surface is higher than the surrounding deck surface.

•The computer "rocks" a bit when placed on a known flat surface.

I find solid-surface and granite countertops very effective flat test surfaces.

Without being able to inspect the MacBook in person, no one here in the Apple Community Forums will be able to give you a definitive answer. Take your MacBook to an Apple Store and I’m sure they will provide you with next steps/answers.

That being said, I myself had a MacBook a handful of years back, and the lid/screen stopped closing flush with the chassis. I was baffled, I thought maybe after some years the hinge was no longer good…. It wasn’t until I one day took the MacBook off its stand and placed it flat on a desk that I noticed it wasn’t sitting flat…. The MacBook would seesaw/rock front to back mostly under the trackpad area…. Anyways, long story short, I came to realize that the lithium ion battery had swelled inside, actually bloating/warping the aluminum chassis and the raised/bloated area prevented the screen from closing flat. True story.

It sounds like you might wish to take the computer in for evaluation and repair estimate
