Read receipts are not showing even after enabling on the Messages app

My wife and I BOTH have our receipts ENABLED, my messages are showing read on her device. And only every other message shows hers as read on my device. I’ve ask this question on other platforms and every one keeps saying it’s disabled on her device but I have it on hand and it’s ENABLED. So they arent very helpful. We are connected to the same network so I can’t see it being the cause. Any suggestions that’s NOT “she has it turned off”?
