if the directory has some corruption, the Volume may not be mountable.
Use Disk Utility Repair disk to repair:
the Physical DEVICE (if not showing use the tiny View menu to "show all devices")
the container-disk
The Mountable Volume
if errors are found, try running repeatedly until all errors are fixed. If it is too damaged, it may not be mountable without an ERASE, and that deletes everything.
A drive that will not provide BOTH its make&model and a reasonable non-zero size/capacity can not be used for anything.
