MacBook Pro (macOS Sequoia 15.5) screen adjusts screen brightness automatically

Even though I have unticked the box for 'Automatically adjust screen brightness' after reading other threads, the screen on my Macbook Pro (Sequoia 15.5) is continuing to adjust screen brightness automatically. Usually, what this means is that it randomly goes dark irrespective of external lighting. My eyesight isn't brilliant, so this is a really annoying feature.

I haven't found a solution for this problem in the forums. One person has suggested it could be the effect of an extension. Has anyone tried this, and did it work?

  • Battery Settings: Your Mac may dim the display when running on battery power to conserve energy.
    • To prevent this: Go to System Settings > Battery > Options and toggle off "Slightly dim the display on battery power".

Does this occur while the laptop is using the Power Adapter, or while the laptop is running on the Battery?

Does the brightness change while you are actively using the laptop, or after the laptop is sitting without any human interaction for a few minutes?

Check your Lock Screen System Settings. This is where you configure how long the computer can sit without human interaction before the display dims or goes to screensaver, or locks the screen, or puts the laptop to sleep.

If the issue only occurs when running on the Battery, then there is another screen dimming setting....I think it may be called "Slightly dim the display while on battery power". This setting has moved around a lot in recent years so just search the System Settings for it.

Even with all that I still find these laptops may dim there screens. One trick I have discovered is to cover the camera area on the display in order to cover the Ambient Light Sensor. This will cause the screen to dim. While still covering the sensor & camera, adjust the brightness to where you want it. Remove your hand from covering the camera & light sensor. The brightness should not change at least until the laptop is rebooted (or perhaps until you wake it from sleep).
