How do automatic security updates work on macOS?

I bought a new MacBook that came with 15.2 installed. When I set it up, I couldn't log in with my Apple ID right away because I didn't have my phone with me for 2FA. As well, when I first booted, Software Update had an option to upgrade to 15.5, but I used it for a while (web browsing, installed a couple of apps, downloaded some ebooks, etc.) before doing that. I don't remember any other options for installing updates. Would macOS have automatically installed security patches on first boot, or am I at security risk because I didn't upgrade to 15.5 right away and/or didn't have my Apple ID linked for a couple of days? (Sorry if this is an odd question, I'm more used to the Windows model of security patching.)

macOS does not apply security patches outside of updates.

Anytime there's a patch it will be offered within a version of update shown in the Apple menu and in System Settings ➜ General ➜ Software Update.

If you did not update your Mac is vulnerable, but unlike Windows it's not going to be an open book. Patches usually fix targeted vulnerabilities where specific things have to happened and specific circumstances met for the vulnerability to be an issue.

You should have no issues currently simply because you did not immediately update.

Could not agree more— worry about something else.

Always advise to stay current, realize you are running the latest macOS... so you are a few point updates behind, this is not going to bring down the house.

I always advise to stay current for bug fixes, security updates.

Anything pressing out of the norm gets taken care off:

Apple uses its Software Update service— as a mechanism for installing “background and critical” updates that are installed silently in the background with no notifications to the user.

See your Settings below, make changes to suit your needs; I do not know what is the default.

Then would macOS have applied whatever security updates were available for 15.2 on first boot, or should I be concerned about some sort of possible security problem because I was using the machine before I upgraded to 15.5?
