finder search and spotlight search acting strange since updating to sequoia 15.5

since updating to 15.5:

  • finder search is not returning results
  • spotlight search returns web results and App Store results. I had used this very often to open apps, screenshot...etc vs clogging up my dock (and it was faster)

not sure if anyone else is noticing odd behavior since updating

my specs are:

MBA M2

24GB RAM

MacBook Air, macOS 15.5

Finder Search relies on Spotlight. So first try rebuilding the Spotlight indexing.

Rebuild the Spotlight index on your Mac - Apple Support

If that doesn't help, go to > System Settings > Spotlight and check the desired boxes.

Choose suggestion categories for Spotlight on Mac - Apple Support

I've been experiencing these same issues since updating to Sequoia 15.5: the search function in Finder does not return any results, and Spotlight seems incapable of returning most files or applications as search results.

@den.thed I've tried both of your solutions and they did not work for me. When trying to rebuild the spotlight index via Search Privacy, I got the following error popup.

Checking and unchecking categories helped me get rid of some unwanted suggestions, but has not helped to bring back useful search results. Virtually none of my files show up in Spotlight.
