Thanks. I appreciate your help I tried 'Remove' with AppleTV and News and it worked just fine. They're gone. However, Podcasts and Music won't 'remove.' I suspect it's because I made the mistake of clicking on them to see what they were and now I can't figure out how to 'Quit' them.
Here is one way to quit an app: Quit apps on Mac - Apple Support
The control-click menu briefly mentioned here has various useful functions, as was mentioned above: Use the Dock on Mac - Apple Support One of those useful control-click functions is the ability to keep or remove an app in the dock. That’s independent of whether the app is running, which is what you’re probably meeting. Among the functions in Control-Click menu is the ability to quit or force-quit an app.
Here is the Mac user guide: Mac User Guide - Apple Support (I re-read or re-skim that guide roughly once a year, as Apple inevitably and quietly adds some new and useful things.)

If you didn’t go through the first setup “hello” sequence when the Mac started up, you’ll want to reset the Mac before you get too far along. Otherwise, the Mac apps and other data will remain tied to the previous owner. (If you did go through then”hello” and welcome to Mac, ignore this.)
Here is how to customize the Dock and related settings:
You will want to have backups. Backups are the only way to mark data as valuable. Here is how:

MrHoffman,
Thanks again. I have not yet figured out how to connect the laptop to the Internet, but I did figure out the process to 'Quit' the apps, so at least that problem is solved.
