How do I fix "Device Timed Out" error when importing from iPhone?

I have a MacBook Air M1 running MacOS Sequoia 15.5 (24F74) and an iPhone 13 Pro running iOS 18.5

I often scan documents using Preview and the iPhone as a scanner. So, I open "Preview", click on "Import from iPhone" -> "Scan documents".

EVERY SINGLE TIME, it works for a bit then I start getting the error shown in the attached screenshot:

"Could not import from ... 's iPhone The device timed out".

This happens every single time. Every single time,

1- I start scanning

2- DO NOT TOUCH anything else (only the Preview app)

3- I get the error

I was never able to complete a "long" scanning session (multiple scans) without receiving this error.

WHY? How can I avoid this error?

iPhone is using 85% of the Total Drive Capacity

MacBook Air is using 88% of the total drive capacity

I can not speak to iPhone and suggested Empty Space

But the MBA I can

It’s good computer practice to keep at least 15% to 20% of the total drive capacity empty to avoid unintended consequences which maybe Part of the Over Issue

It would seem reasonable to believe, a similar need would also apply to an iPhone

Good questions by @ BDAqua >> re-Empty Space on both devices and battery levels

Using a Headless M4 Mac Mini with Sequoia 15.5

Using an iPhone 15 Pro with iOS 18.5

Used Preview on the computer and Preview application

Both Devices are adjacent to one another

Same Wifi Network , bluetooth ON on both devices

Plenty of Empty Space on both units

Plenty of battery on iPhone

In Preview , File >> Import of iPhone << Scan

Immediately, the iPhone Camera came to life

Yes, 1 page but maybe you need to Plugin the iPhone to Charger for multi page Scanning ?

As I said, it happens every time, so I cannot answer your question. Just to satisfy your curiosity: it has failed also with both the devices plugged.

Last time (a couple of hours ago), the situation was approximately this:

  • iPhone charge at approximately 100% (I unplugged the phone 30 minutes before the scanning without doing much with it)
  • Macbook Air with charge level = 100%, used on battery (I unplugged the laptop just before the scanning)

Free space:

  • iPhone ~ 20GB free (out of 128 GB)
  • MacBook Air: 30GB free (out of 256 GB)

Additional info: they were on the same WiFi network, but you do not need that according to:

Continuity Camera: Use your iPhone or iPad to scan documents or take a picture on your Mac - Apple Support

All the requirements listed by Apple are always fulfilled, but the scan process fails nonetheless.

Additional info:

now the scan works again and I did not do anything (besides waiting) - no device has been restarted, no files have been deleted, battery levels are now lower than they were when it failed.

This is a question that has a specific answer, which - may be - only Apple knows: please do not ask to log-out restart format delete recharge reinstall the OS do this do that etc. if you do not know the exact answer. I have made plenty of reasonable, unreasonable, absurd and random attempts before asking this question here. Apple should explain why the connection times out when all the listed requirements are satisfied.

You can’t make a statement that it has a specific answer without knowing what it is, so well wait for the reveal.

The presented facts ? speak for themselves
