I'm used to Netflix where the show summary is very obvious as are previous seasons. When I start the app, I see pictures of shows but the only option is to click the play button. There are categories of shows and movies with pictures. Am I in the wrong part of the app? When I go to Apple TV I have to click start streaming. Is there another way in?

When you select a show in “Continue Watching”/“Up Next”, then the movie or episode will begin playback immediately. (You may override that on Mac through the (⋯) button or Control-click, then select Go to Show.)
Selecting a show from other rows or pages would first show you the main details for that movie or TV show. The main details page would typically have a big splash image, a play button (or buy/rent/subscribe button), and below that more details, including a description, episode list, a trailer, cast and crew, how to watch options, language support, etc. Is that what you are looking for?
