Find My Mac not activating on Mac Mini M4

Hi all. I am trying to setup Find My Mac so I can locate my Mac Mini using the 'Find My' app. It is shown as 'on' in iCloud settings but under Mac System Settings > Devices when I click on my Mac it shows Find My Mac is 'off'

It doesn't allow me to change it under that setting. I've logged out and rebooted and logged back in but still won't show.

Any ideas?

For info I migrated from an old Mac Mini to a new one so not sure if that makes any difference? On the Find My app is shows my old Mac Mini (no location found as its powered off and not used anymore). My new Mac isn't showing under devices. I have latest OS on new Mac (15.5)

Here is Apple's guidance for turning on Find My: Set up Find My on Mac - Apple Support

I recently had a similar issue with a MBA. For me, the fix was to do First Aid on the drive volumes after booting in macOS Recovery, although the computer was operating just fine otherwise. How to repair a Mac storage device with Disk Utility - Apple Support

Thank you, I’m not the most techy person in the world, is it fairly straightforward to do? Does it mean wiping the Mac and reinstalling everything again?

You're welcome.

Yes, repairing the drive directories is fairly straightforward.

No, repairing the drive directories absolutely does not require wiping and/or reinstalling anything! It's not difficult and will only take a few minutes. Please read through the link I provided earlier, step by step. Twice.

The basic steps are:

• Startup the Mac in macOS Recovery. Follow the steps for the Mac with Apple Silicon.

• Launch the Disk Utility application while booted in Recovery.

• Select each volume on the internal drive and run First Aid.

• Restart the Mac normally and try to turn on Find My.

If DU reports that it has found errors that it cannot repair, then you will have to make a decision whether to format the drive or not. However, First Aid can and will often find relatively minor errors that it can repair.

In any case, you should already be making backups of your startup drive using either Time Machine or another backup method like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! Apple has given you the Time Machine app in the macOS. All you need to do is bring an external drive and set it up. Back up your Mac with Time Machine - Apple Support
