How do I free up storage on my iPhone to install updates?

What to do? Not enough space to upload recent iPhone updates!

Can't use half my apps... Deleting text messages etc not helping.

And I'm not so sure about using advertised apps to "clean up your phone"

Thanks! TSC

If you have access to a computer, you can perform the update from there and it does not require as much space on your device. On device updates requires the update to first be downloaded to the device and then installed from there and when using a computer, the update is downloaded to the computer and the computer uses that to update the phone.

You will end up having to delete files, but you can transfer photos to a computer for temporary storage and then copy them back once your update is complete. You should have a look and see what it is that is taking up so much space. Settings > General > iPhone Storage will list by app. I know I was surprised by an app I had that should take up almost no data storage space and I saw it had some mysterious 2GB. I called the vendor and they had no idea what was taking up that much storage. I had to delete the app entirely to free up the space.

You'll have to go through all your data including messages, photos, videos, emails, apps are a big one, and more and delete what you no longer need. Your assertion is right about advertised clean up apps, do not install them and they do work as advertised. Many will even take your money and some users have reported data loss with them that was not intended. Unfortunately system storage is fixed upon purchase and if you simply cannot choose what to delete, you may be better off purchasing a newer iPhone with more than adequate storage.
