Saving edits from External Editors for Photos to Mac Photos not working

It is happening again! RE: Saving edits from External Editors for Ph… - Apple Community

Everything has been functioning well for years. I am running Mac OS Sequoia 15.5 on MacBook Pro. This past week, I upgraded 2024 Photoshop Elements to the 2025 version. I have reviewed all the suggestions and implemented fixes to address the problem in 2017. All of the settings are correct. However, External Editors does not save the edited images to Mac Photos.

I don't understand why this is happening. In the intervening years, I have upgraded Mac OS and PSE without any issue.

Any suggestions?

Update.

I spoke with an AppleCare advisor. Using screen sharing, he observed me demonstrating process used to edit a photo with PSE 2025 as an External Editor. Open image in Mac Photos > Edit > External Editors > PSE 2025 (to do edit) > File > Save > JPEG Options > OK, and this is where the problem was found. There is no option in PSE 2025 to save the edited photo directly to the Mac Photo app. The option is grayed out in the drop-down window. By default, PSE saves the image to the Pictures file. As a result, the file must be exported to the desktop and then imported into Mac Photos. The image edited in PSE 2025 is saved to the Pictures file rather than saving over the original image in the Mac Photos app.

The next step was to repeat the process using my PSE 2024 version. It worked perfectly to Save Changes in PSE 2024, allowing immediate return to Mac Photos External Editor > Save Changes. One image was saved in Photos app with edits from PSE 2024 applied.

The only way to use the PSE 2025 edited file is to export it to the desktop and import it into Photos. Since this product does not serve my needs, the AppleCare advisor suggested that I contact Adobe Support to report the issue and request a refund.

I called Adobe and had to request to be connected to technical support (no direct line). The advisor I spoke to completely understood the issue and readily agreed to approve a refund for the amount I paid for the upgrade from PSE 2024 to PSE 2025.

I am currently using the command "Replace with Image from Disk" in External Editors to save the edited version in Photos. I let my editor write the edited version to the Desktop, then use External Editors to bind the new edited version to the image I have been editing. This is still working well.

This has the added bonus, that I can save the edited version as a HEIC instead of TIFF and save plenty of storage. My external editor Luminar Neo tends to return 50MB TIFFS when I edit a small JPEG of just 3MB, which is wasteful.

It is in the External Editors photo editing extension - I am using this a lot, Richard.

What I am doing:

  • Edit photo using an external editor, either with "Image > Edit with" or using a photo editing extension. When I want to edit a RAW file and pass it as RAW, I am calling the external editor using the "External Editors" extension.
  • When finished editing I export the result from this app as a new file, in the format I want.
  • Then I select the image in Photos and open it in Edit mode, then call the external Editors extension.
  • Sometimes I am getting a warning, that the image is in use, when I want to open it again, but I confirm, that the editing is finished.

At the bottom of the External Editors panel is the command "Replace with Image from Disk".

  • Here I click the "Choose file" button. The External Editors extension will now open the folder in the library where the externally edited versions are stored. I ignore this and navigate to ma Desktop, where I have saved the edited version I want to use.

This will pair the file from the disk with original image in Photos as an original and version pair.

I purchased External editors many years ago from the App Store for just 1€. I am not sure, if it is still available. But it has been worth its money. And it is still working in the current system version.

Well, drat!

I'm following with Graphic Converter, since that is in the list: Extensions -Photos Editing

Apparently with Edit (•••) Photos saves a TIF file in GC Library folder. Then if I do Save as or Save Copy as with the same name, but jpg, then Photos reloads the TIF file, and I get no chance to choose a different replacement file. Same in Lightroom.

Does your "Replace" option only occur with Luminar? or have I missed a button somewhere?
