How can I stop MacBook Air from restarting randomly with macOS Sequoia 15.5?

Hi everyone, I’m experiencing a problem with my MacBook Air (M2) where it keeps restarting randomly. It doesn’t happen constantly—sometimes it’s once or twice a week, other times a few days apart—but lately, it feels like it’s becoming more frequent, and yesterday it restarted twice in one day, which has me worried. Each time, it shows a message saying, ‘Your MacBook restarted because of a problem.’ I’m running macOS Sequoia, and I tried booting into safe mode once, but I’m not sure if I did it right or if it helped, since the issue happened again after that. I haven’t done much else to fix it because I’m not very tech-savvy, and this is my first Mac—it’s only about a year old, so I don’t know if this is normal. And no, I don't usually have any external things plugged in my laptop. I use a bluetooth mouse and that's it. it's not usually connected to anything like a printer or something like that. I read online that it might be caused by a problematic app, but I haven’t seen any notifications about specific software needing to be removed, like some forums mentioned. Any advice on troubleshooting or next steps would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi there! Sorry to hear you're experiencing these random restarts - definitely not normal, especially on a newer MacBook Air. Let's go through a couple of steps to help figure out what's going on:

🧰 1. Check for Panic Reports (Crash Logs)

When your Mac restarts and says it was “because of a problem,” it usually logs the cause.

  • Go to Apple Menu > System Settings > General > System Report
  • Or open the Console app (press Cmd + Space, type "Console", and open it), then look under Crash Reports or System Reports
  • Look for something that says “panic” or kernel panic. These reports can hint whether it’s a hardware, driver, or software issue.

If you find one and want help reading it, feel free to copy and paste the first 20–30 lines into your reply.

🧼 2. Boot into Safe Mode Again (Properly)

Safe Mode disables third-party extensions and does a system check.

To do it correctly:

  1. Turn off your Mac.
  2. Turn it on, and immediately press and hold the power button until you see Loading startup options.
  3. Select your main disk, then hold Shift, and click Continue in Safe Mode. You should see "Safe Boot" in a red font in the top right hand corner of your screen.

Use your Mac normally in Safe Mode for a while. If it doesn’t restart there, the issue might be caused by login items or third-party software.

What happened when you started up in Safe Mode? Any panics?

An app crash log is useless. An app crashing may be a symptom, but it is not the cause of a panic. I’m sorry you were led needlessly down this path.

If you have a panic log, that might be useful. An EtreCheck report will tell us if you have any kernel extensions installed. There is nothing unsafe about EtreCheck. There are people on this site that like to spread fear, uncertainty, and doubt.

The two predominate causes of kernel panics are hardware faults and third-party kernel extensions. There are a few other extremely rare causes including a bad Apple kernel extension. One of those other rare causes relates to NVRAM. A NVRAM reset may resolve the issue, but not likely.

For third-party kernel extensions, Safe Mode will disable them. If you can stand to work on Safe Mode until a panic would be expected, that can help determine if it is a kernel extensions installed. The other way is to uninstall any kernel extensions following the developer’s instructions.

If it panics with no kernel extensions installed, you most likely have a hardware fault. That can be internal or an external device, though the latter is often tied to a kernel extension.

To avoid a session of Q&A, Q&A  and Q&A

Download the Application Etrecheck ( External Link ) directly from the Developer.

This is a Diagnostic Tool that makes no changes to the computer.

It makes a coherent and readable inventory of both the Hardware and Software used on the computer

The application is free or paid for added features.

The Report will Not Reveal Any Personal Information.

Thanks for sharing the crash report - it tells us that the process "suggestd", part of Apple's CoreSuggestions framework, is crashing. This is a background service that suggests contacts, events, links, etc.

Try this easy cache-clear first. Go to your Launchpad (on your dock) and click on "Other" then launch "Terminal" - it will appear at the right hand end of your dock.

Now type into Terminal .......... rm -rf ~/Library/Suggestions. (Copy and paste if you prefer!) then hit return.

Once you have done so, restart your computer.

Please let us know if it still crashes.

Thank you.

Hi again - perfect, that command ran successfully! 😄

You won't see any confirmation in Terminal — that's completely normal. The absence of an error message means it worked.

Now the next important step is to restart your Mac. This helps macOS rebuild the Suggestions cache cleanly.

Please let us know after you've restarted — and if the issue with random restarts/crashes has stopped. Fingers crossed it helps!

The Apple Support Community Forums are sometimes visited by AI / LMM / ChatBots.

AI / LLM are basically a Super Version of Predictive Text which is based upon a Data Set.

When that Data Set is based upon older data points, the outcome of the response will be equally out dated and / or unreliable

AI is also the newest form for Data Mining by Large Corporations.

Suggest being very careful about this.

Hi again! Just a quick update:

I followed your instructions and did a Safe Boot. When my Mac started up, I saw the red "Safe Boot" label in the upper-right corner for a few seconds, so I think it worked. But after a little while, it disappeared. I'm not sure if that's expected or if that means it exited Safe Mode — just thought I'd mention it in case it matters.

Also, as you asked, I’ve pasted part of my crash report below. Please let me know if you need more of it or if you spot anything that could explain the issue.

P.S. I saw someone recommend the etrecheck, I was gonna do that but again, I'm not very techy. So, I didn't even know where to start with that.

Translated Report (Full Report Below

Im sorry it's a bit long, I just really don't know which part was actually relevant. When I checked my console this was the only thing there was in the crash log, its dated for today, this morning. IDK if that matters. thanks again

To have made such a statement as this " That's not quite true. Personal Information WILL be revealed to the website owner."

It is Technically not accurate

To substantiate such a claim , one would need to post such a report with the Personal Information appearing in the Full and Unedited Report

Then and only then would the claim be have any credence

Thanks for the clarification, Owl-53.

To be precise, I wasn’t referring to the content of the EtreCheck report itself in that comment, but rather to the data shared when a user visits or interacts with the EtreCheck website.

Like most websites, it can collect a visitor’s IP address, browser info, system details, and possibly location, especially if someone uses the upload/share function. That metadata, while not part of the diagnostic report, still constitutes personal or identifiable information in many privacy contexts.

Whether this is a concern or not depends on individual privacy preferences - but I felt it was worth highlighting so users can make an informed choice.

I hope that clarifies the intent of my comment.

hi again, I had hoped I didn'thave to come back here, but lo and behold. it just restarted just now, after at least a day of it not restarting, I was actually getting my hopes up. but this time I did notice something new. It was the first time that I saw that the terminal was actually open, and it was displaying this code. unfortunately I forgot to copy it and idk I guess I also exited it. and I can't seem to find it, even in the crash log

Hi, I'm sorry so late, it's just that I've been busy and honestly this is really draining me really bad. I'm tight on budget right now and I can't afford to even get it fixed or replaced if it turns out to be a hardware issue from all the articles I've been reading. I talked to apple chat support. They walked me through into reinstalling MacOS. And I did. And it kinda helped, it didn't restart for 4 days. And suddenly it restarted again this Thursday. Ans now I'm at my wits end. I went to the very last thing I can do. To fully wipe my computer, thankfully there's not much I need to be stored since my work are usually in the web. So did a clean wipe and reinstalled MacOS. It's the first day, I turned off everything, just to make sure that there's no software or any background process that might cause this, didn't install any apps either. This would be day 1, like it's literally a bare Mac right there, even find my mac is off and even in location finding. Just to make sure no reason for any crash. I'm just praying to God it's not a hardware issue, because if it is, I can really lose my job as well since I need a working laptop
