Input volume on MacBook Pro suddenly extremely low, unusable for Zoom

The input volume on my MacBook Pro running the latest Sequoia system has become EXTREMELY low, rendering the computer unusable for Zoom meetings, or any other online meeting. Convinced it is a software issue. Never had this problem in 3 years with this computer until now. Output volume is fine.

1) Go to > Apple > System Settings > Sound > Output & Input > check the sliders for both Output and Input.

2) Make sure that the MacBook Pro's Built-in Microphone is not blocked by crud or a stickie note.

3) Test an external head set w/mic or a usb microphone.
