This has been repeatedly answered, by multiple contributors, throughout this thread...

If you are currently enrolled in a beta programme and wish to return to using the current production version, this support page provides the necessary information to remove the beta from your iPhone:

How to uninstall iOS beta software - Apple Support

Be aware that restoring an earlier version of iOS will completely reset and erase your iPhone. Assuming that you have a pre-existing iCloud or iTunes backup of your iPhone that has not been updated since installing the iOS 26 beta, your locally stored data and files can be restored after returning your iPhone to iOS 18.5; if you don't have a pre-existing backup, all locally stored data will be irretrievably lost:

Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup - Apple Support

An iCloud or iTunes backup can only be restored to a device running the same or later version of iOS than created (or last updated) the backup. As such a backup created or updated by iOS 26 cannot be restored to a device running iOS 18.5.

Whether or not you are able to update your iPad to a newer version of iOS/iPadOS will be dictated by the iPad model - and the currently installed version of iOS. You can find this information here:

Settings > General > About

Not sure which iPad you have? Identify your iPad model.

As of 29 July 2025, here is a list of the highest version of iOS supported by the older models of iPad (for simplicity - “generations” are shortened to a number) that are restricted in their ability to be updated:

32-bit devices (obsolete)

iPad1 - iOS 5.1.1

iPad2, iPad3 and iPad mini1 - iOS 9.3.5 (WiFi Only models), iOS 9.3.6 (WiFi+Cellular)

iPad4 - iOS 10.3.3 (WiFi Only), iOS 10.3.4 (WiFi+Cellular)

64-bit devices

iPad Air1*, iPad mini2 and iPad mini3* - iOS 12.5.7

iPad Air2, iPad mini4 - iPadOS 15.8.4

iPad5, iPad Pro (9.7"/12.9" 1st generation)* - iPadOS 16.7.11

iPad6, iPad Pro (10.5"/12.9" 2nd generation) - iPadOS 17.7.9

(*) obsolete

Newer models are all able to be updated to the current version - iPadOS 18.6

  • iPad Pro 13" (M4)
  • iPad Pro 12.9" (3rd generation and later)
  • iPad Pro 11" (1st generation and later + M4)
  • iPad Air (3rd generation and later + M2/M3)
  • iPad (7th generation and later)
  • iPad mini (5th generation and later + A17 Pro)

If your iPad is capable of update to a more recent version of iOS/iPadOS than is currently installed, these support pages outline both the available methods by which the update can be performed - and troubleshooting should you experience difficulties:

If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch – Apple Support

Be aware that while an iPad may be capable of update, in some circumstances you may need to use a computer to perform the update*. To do so, you will need access to either a Windows PC (with iTunes for Windows installed - or the more recent Apple Devices App) or a Mac (with iTunes or Finder - as appropriate for the installed version of MacOS). Ensure that your installed version of iTunes has been updated to the most recent version; the essential device drivers are included.

Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with the Finder - Apple Support

Apple Devices App (Windows PC):

(*) If you don’t have access to a suitable computer of your own, that of a helpful friend or family member will suffice. Alternatively, the technicians at the Genius Bar of your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) will be delighted to assist.

If you have a beta profile installed, ensure this has been removed from your iPad - as, otherwise, installation of production software updates may be inhibited. This support page provides the necessary information to remove the beta from your iPad:

You should note that for your iPad to install an available update, its battery must be charged to at least 50% capacity - and/or be connected to its Power Adapter. Similarly, the iPad can only be updated over a standard WiFi connection - or be updated by a PC or Mac using iTunes or Finder - over a USB connection.

If you’re looking to revert from iOS 26 to iOS 18, there are numerous replies in the ten pages of the thread here.

You will lose some data by reverting with a backup.

You will lose somewhat more data with a reset, if there is no backup.

If you can’t lose any data, continue with the iOS 26 beta.

True, every change is met with resistance and people choose familiarity over new features. I agree with you on that.

But recently, specifically with iOS26, the company has released a version without fully making it functional. There are a lot of bugs and serious issues with this version that is released to the public. Never faced this kind of issue with previous OS upgrades (except that one time if you know what I mean).

This collective surge of people asking to downgrade to 18.5 is not because of familiarity or because they didn’t “like” the new design. It is more on bugs and usability.

for example, this new OS drains battery twice faster in my case compared to 18.5 with my same type and quantum of usage. That itself is a strong reason that makes me choose an old OS over any new feature the OS might offer. I am okay if my phone stays on till the night even if I don’t get all the new fancy features. Because to enjoy those feature, I will first need the phone to be on.

I don’t know about the author of this query or other participants in this thread, but me personally, I would like a downgrade without data loss from Apple and wait till they fix all the bugs in this OS and the battery issue to upgrade back to 26.

also, we know downgrade is not allowed and that’s why it is not possible, given none of us have any authority in this matter. But this is more of a plea to the community to support the notion that downgrading should be allowed, especially in matters like this where the new OS needs some work.

so your answers are correct, currently it is not possible. But they should make it possible, because technically we can do that. Just that would be a lot more work for developers.
