How can I play AVI files on Mac?

So, what’s the deal with AVI files on Mac? QuickTime just refuses to open them. Do I need a special codec pack, or is there an easy way to watch AVI videos without converting them?

What’s the best solution for macOS, especially on Sequoia?

AVI files are not native to macOS. Never have been. You have been provided reasonable free third-party options that have the codecs to play these types of videos. VideoLan provides X86_64 or ARM binaries for Intel or Apple Silicon Macs. I use VLC 3.0.21 on Sequoia v15.5 and it works well on either platform.
