AVI files are not native to macOS. Never have been. You have been provided reasonable free third-party options that have the codecs to play these types of videos. VideoLan provides X86_64 or ARM binaries for Intel or Apple Silicon Macs. I use VLC 3.0.21 on Sequoia v15.5 and it works well on either platform.

VLC, IINA, there are others.
Suggest using VLC, Cisdem Video Player, or Plex Media Player
VideoLAN’s VLC can play most things, but I didn’t see AVI listed—could be a proprietary format.
