no arrow key equivelant?

is there a method to select a posistion in a body of text other than trying to touch the exact location? or destroying a pile of existing text with th backspace button? apple really failed on this.

iphone 3gs, iOS 4

It is called a multi-touch screen for a reason, and no they didn't.

The iPhone is not designed or intended for everyone. If you prefer a phone with plastic buttons taking up screen real estate, you have plenty of devices to choose from.

I think so, depending on what you mean by the above. Press and hold in roughly the right spot, and a magnifying glass will pop up to let you slide the cursor into exactly the right spot.

There is a bookmark for the iPhone User Guide in Mobile Safari.

If you already found the magnifying glass, no, there's no other method. Send feedback to Apple here, as they are not checking these groups for problems:

If you know there are a bazzillion other phones available, then just ask your question and leave out your opinion of what Apple has really failed on.

Coulda, shoulda, woulda. That is right, they didn't, but their multi-touch screen interface sure has been copied a bunch and the copiers that have a multi-touch interface that doesn't work as well may have the option. By the time I did that, my finger has already done it by touch.
