One common series of external hard drives is Seagate One Touch. Out-of-theBox, it work splendidly across devices --Mac and PC. So, look into using one. Note that if you were to back up your Mac with Time Machine, you'd ave to format it with APFS. Elsewise, a format is not required.

Because Time Machine does its work at low priority in the background, you should not pay extra for a Time Machine drive that is FAST.
Be sure to get a drive at least twice the size of everything you need to back up, or it will quickly become annoying. Bigger is better.
